tutorial: Fabric Flower Hair Clip

March 23, 2011

To make these flower hair pins, you’ll need

  • a silk flower (of your choice)
  • pearls (and/or crystals)
  • needle & thread
  • hair clip (I prefer the alligator clip)
  • jewelry pliers (optional)
  • patience :)

1. remove the flower from the rest of the flower stem (they should come off easily with a soft pull)

I’m using a cream colored ranunculus

2. remove the plastic from the flower

3.  Take the petals apart (for the ranunculus, there were plastic pieces in between the petals, so make sure you get all that out)

4. re-assemble the flower into a pattern you like.  I split the flower into 2 flowers so that it would be less “full,” allowing room to see the pearl/crystal center beads.

5.  I used a sewing pin to hold my flower in place (this is completely optional).  Thread your needle (I used white thread).

6. hand stitch the petals together.  Start the stitching from the bottom, pulling up into the center (front) of the flower.  If you’re having a hard time getting the needle through the petals, try pulling the needle using jewelry pliers.

7. Continue stitching a full circle in the center of the flower, so that the petals are nice and secure.

(view from the bottom— kind of looks like garlic)

8.  re-thread your needle.  Once done, pull the needle & thread through the pearl/crystal

9.  Take the needle and loop through the thread on the other end.

Pull the needle all the way over– it should look like this:

10.  Take the needle and sew into the center of the flower (or however you wish your design to look)

11.  Take the needle and sew back up into the flower.  Repeat steps 8-10 until all your center beads have been sewn on.

12.  To attach the clip (sorry, didn’t get pictures), you can stitch the clip directly onto the bottom of the flower, hot glue gun it on.

And your done! :)
